Lucky Legs

Knit up these little tube socks for your chairs using scraps of DK. Your chair legs, flooring and your neighbours' ears will be glad you did!

These are very quick to make and using small needles for the weight of yarn allows a nice, dense fabric to form. Getting a tight fit is very important if you want the socks to stay on and to survive all the stresses they will endure. The tension (when the socks are stretched onto the legs) should be around 23 stitches and 36 rows to 10cm. The socks are shown on a chair with leg circumference of around 7cm, measured at the top of the sock. To enlarge, add extra stitches in multiples of four to preserve the 2x2 rib. If you add more than eight extra stitches, you may wish to work an additional round of K2tog to end.

You will need:
  1. A few metres of DK weight yarn per sock
  2. 2.75mm circular needles long enough for magic loop knitting (these can be knit on double pointed needles, but the small number of stitches per round makes this very challenging for me!)
Cast on 16 stitches, using the cable cast on method.

Row 1: (K1, P2, K1) to end of row. Join to continue work in round
Round 2-16: Continue to work in 2x2 rib, working each stitch as it appears
Round 17: (SKPSSO, K2tog) to end of round.
Round 18: K to end of round

Pass thread through the remaining stitches and draw tightly together.
Sew in ends (before sewing in the cast-on end, check the fit on the chair leg - you may want to leave the slight gap at the start if the sock is a tight fit!)

Done! Well, unless you want all your chair legs to have a sock, in which case, time to cast on again....
